Für die meisten Menschen sind [[Naturheilverfahren]], [[Homöopathie]] oder [[Anthroposophische Medizin]] keine Alternative zur konventionellen Medizin, sondern eine Ergänzung. Eine solche Kombination von komplementärer und konventioneller Medizin wird seit einigen Jahren als '''Integrative Medizin''' bezeichnet.
Für die Anthroposophische Medizin ist dieser integrative Ansatz ganz selbstverständlich - versteht sie sich doch seit ihrer Entwicklung vor rund 100 Jahren explizit als Erweiterung und nicht als Alternative zur modernen konventionellen Medizin.
Steigende Nachfrage
Ihre Stärke entfaltet die Integrative Medizin insbesondere da, wo die konventionelle Akutmedizin mit ihren Hightech-Möglichkeiten oft an ihre Grenzen stößt: bei der Therapie chronischer Erkrankungen. Weltweit nehmen diese Erkrankungen, die viel mit dem "westlichen" Lebensstil zu tun haben, stark zu. In der Integrativen Therapie geht es in der Regel darum, Gesundungskräfte, Wohlbefinden und Eigeninitiative der Patienten zu stärken sowie Begleit- und Folgeerkrankungen zu verhindern. Einige Krankheitsbilder wie zum Beispiel Bluthochdruck können mit Lebensstilveränderungen, die in der Integrativen Medizin im Fokus stehen, sogar vollständig geheilt werden.
Die Integrative Medizin wird global immer stärker nachgefragt. Patient/innen wollen heute selbstverständlich integrativ medizinisch behandelt werden. In Europa hat sich die Integrativmedizin aus einer langen Tradition verschiedener komplementärer Verfahren entwickelt und ist traditionell fest etabliert. In Deutschland nutzen bis zu 70 Prozent der Bürger/innen Ansätze der Komplementärmedizin. In den USA, Asien und Lateinamerika wächst die Bedeutung von integrativ-medizinischen Konzepten ebenfalls.
Im medizinischen Alltag angekommen
Auch Ärztinnen und Ärzte greifen selbstverständlich auf [[komplementärmedizin]]ische Verfahren zurück: Heute wenden von den 150.000 ambulant tätigen Ärzten in Deutschland mehr als 60.000 Fachärzte regelmäßig Verfahren aus der Komplementärmedizin in ihrer täglichen Praxis an. Über 40.000 haben eine Zusatzbezeichnung im Bereich der Komplementärmedizin erworben oder eine curriculare Ausbildung abgeschlossen. Die Integrative Medizin ist inzwischen Realität in der täglichen medizinischen Praxis.
